We all experience that nagging sense of disconnect from time to time. It’s that feeling when our internal world, our thoughts and emotions, seems at odds with our external actions and interactions. Perhaps you feel one way inside, but act another way entirely. This dissonance can lead to stress, anxiety, and a general sense of unease.
In my work on the BH Sales Kennel Kelp Holistic Healing Hour Podcast and YouTube channel (@billholt8792), I delve into tools that can help us bridge this gap. Two powerful frameworks, the Enneagram and the HEXACO model, offer unique insights into our personalities.
The Enneagram: Your Inner Compass
The Enneagram illuminates the why behind our behaviors. It reveals our core motivations, fears, and desires, categorizing personalities into nine distinct types. It helps us understand our fundamental drives, such as the Type One’s pursuit of perfection or the Type Six’s quest for security.
HEXACO: Your Social Map
In contrast, the HEXACO model provides a map of our social interactions. It outlines six key dimensions of personality: Honesty-Humility, Emotionality, Extraversion, Agreeableness, Conscientiousness, and Openness to Experience. 1 It explains how we tend to behave in social contexts, highlighting our tendencies toward cooperation, emotional expression, and intellectual curiosity.
The Disconnect and the Solution: Coherence
The challenge arises when our Enneagram-driven inner world clashes with our HEXACO-driven outer behaviors. For example, a Type Nine (Peacemaker) who scores low on Conscientiousness might struggle to meet deadlines, leading to inner conflict and external friction.
This is where the concept of coherence comes in. HeartMath techniques, which focus on achieving heart-brain coherence, can help us align our inner and outer selves. By practicing mindfulness and regulating our emotional responses, we can bridge the gap between our feelings and actions.
How Coherence Helps:
Emotional Regulation: Coherence helps us manage emotional reactivity, allowing us to respond to situations with greater clarity and composure.
Improved Decision-Making: When our heart and brain are in sync, we can make more balanced and intuitive decisions.
Enhanced Relationships: By cultivating coherence, we can communicate more effectively and build stronger, more harmonious relationships.
Increased Self-Awareness: Coherence practices foster a deeper connection to our inner selves, allowing us to identify and address underlying patterns.
By combining the insights of the Enneagram and HEXACO with the practice of coherence, we can achieve a more integrated and harmonious sense of self. We can move beyond mere labels and embrace a deeper understanding of our attitudes, fostering greater self-acceptance and emotional wellbeing.
